Ein geheimer Vive Game Jam in Kopenhagen?

WTF?! Da müssen wir hin!

English version below

Build: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12585577/SaltySpaceSlugs.zip

Super Idee!

Pokemon Diorama – Da schlagen Pokemon Fan Herzen höher. Charakter in Lebensgröße.

Don´t drop the torch – von No Shoes No Shirt Svavar Melberg, Jian Dbeis, Silent Guy, Max Wricht, Lars Bindslev, Remi Stuurwol, Caspar Peterson

VR Connected – von Feels Great Andreas Schönhaus, Jonas Hansen

Secret Vive Game Jam in Copenhagen?

WTF?! We gotta go there!

So Nico and I went to visit our friends in Denmark. This awesome jam was organised by Julie Heyde (VRUnicorns + Shayla Games), Marina Øster (Unity) and Peter Pornstar (From Porn).

On Thursday we packed our 2 Vive dev kits and computers, got on the Ferry and went straight to the pre-jam-party organised by Khora VR and sponsored by Labster at the Copenhagen Meatpacking District. It was a nice group of VR developers from Denmark, Germany, Sweden, United States, Finland, Lithuania, Romania, United Kingdom, Italy and other fancy countries. Most jammers knew each other from other jams and newcomers were greeted over beers, ping-pong and late night food.

IMG_1313

IMG_1297

Friday early eve we all met up more or less hungover at the Unity HQ in Copenhagen and set up ten Vives distributed over the entire 1st floor. Unity provided food and drinks for all participants throughout the jam – and CAKE – a huge thanks to Unity for letting us jam in their office and take so good care of us – it was so fantastic how we were treated! Some brought up the comparison it was “a true pampering weekend for jammer!” Even before the super delicious dinner the first beers were opened and it was awarded to the group and topic selection. Robin, Henning and Sexy Simon (three hardcore jammers) started a small Team & Theme session proclaimed out the topics. 12 groups of 1-7 people were formed. The themes “Oscillation” and “Survive” were shouted out by the boys but the participants were completely free to choose either theme or to do something completely different.

During the meal the about 40 attendees got to know each other further during brainstorming and quickly started prototyping different VR games and experiences. Some developers were still groggy from the pre party and paced themselves the first night, whereas others worked through the night or napped a few hours on the sofas in Unity office.

IMG_1255IMG_1262

The first prototypes were ready for playtesting Saturday afternoon and the collaboration between the jammers was impressive – there seemed to be no problem that could not be solved together. Everyone had an open ear and a helping hand if someone is pushed to its limits during the experiment. There has been much discussion and philosophizing, both on current projects and on VR in general, the endless possibilities and applications. Most groups were working on the projects throughout Saturday until the wee hours, except for some crazy birds who ventured onto thin ice across the lakes of inner city to visit some of the Copenhagen bars.

IMG_1318

The Unity office was buzzing with jamming on Sunday throughout the final sprint. The games were polished, shader assets exchanged, bugs were fixed and playtesting feedback was iterated upon. Sunday late afternoon came upon us and a part of the German group had to leave – including Nico unfortunately. Some of the Swedes had to fly back to Stockholm after the last super delicious buffet because of jobs in the non-virtual world. The rest of the jammers stayed until late at night to play the final games and clean-up the space so the nice Unity people would arrive to a spotless office Monday morning.

It was a wonderful, inspiring atmosphere and some of teams are working on turning their jam game into prototype state, so let’s have a look at them:

To give you a better idea of all the amazing games, we have created videos of all of the games created during the jam. Words nor videos can’t possible do the games justice, so for those with access to a Vive some of the jammers shared builds. Please contact the jammers directly, if you have any question on specifics games or tweet @SaraLisaVogl if you need an intro. ;-)

Locomotion method _ skip walking – by Nico Uthe & Sara Vogl from VR Nerds

We dealt with Locomotion and devised a method in VR to emulate the experience of walking. We got stuck on the idea that for every movement we perform self-sufficiently as a human, force has to be added. In our Game Lucid Trips we call this method energy expenditure; but apply it in a low gravity situation. With this “Skip Walk” method we can change our position in space dynamically. After loosening the grips, you are able to navigate in normal Room Scale Mode. Through the precise tracking of the controller, it is possible to make very small steps and to move accurately around corners; the concept is sound, but still needs work.

PointCloud – by Henning Capricorn

We also got some arty stuff. Henning has made a graphical experiment with a moving cloud of points in space.

VR Platform – by VR Platformers Rune Johansen, Matthias Aronsson, Ruud op den Kelder, Bastian Leonhardt Strube, Andreas Aronsson

The VR Platform game was one of my favorites. People moves through spaces by jumping back and forth between platforms, all of which have their own monorail. In the game platforms floated around and when they touched, they give the player the opportunity to move from one to another. There is a destination in the game you are trying to reach, but not all platforms lead in the right direction. You have to be conscious of your surrounding and plan the route you take; less you head in the wrong direction.

Camping Simulator – by Daniel Wallner

IMG_1309Daniel tried the Vive for the first time and was totally blown away by it the entire weekend. He has put his own camper van in the middle of a Lowpoly pinewood forest.

IMG_1281

Bonfire – Horatio from VRUnicorns

Horatio created some really cool flammable logs on a platform in a universe. You can find some stone to spark a flame and enjoy romantic cozy low poly bonfires.

Pinball – by Sexy Simon & Daniel Wallner

Sexy Simon has created a kind of music pinball Squash game where as the ball strikes varied surfaces, it create different tones and sounds. As the ball strikes “targets, they vanish and allow you to hit targets deeper in the distance.  The game could be well used as meditative breakout session, as you can easily get lost in the vivid colors, sounds and particle effects.

SaltySpaceSlugs – by Robin Baumgarten

Salty Space Slugs is a no-frills highspeed salt crystal dodging game, made prettier using a tunnel shader from Keijiro. When Julie tested it she screamed at Robin that he just went from 1 to 3D making the linewobbler in VR.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12585577/SaltySpaceSlugs.zip

SCIFI Samurai – by Peter Fisher, Johan Karlberg, Simon Lajboschitz, Casper Fabricius

SCIFI Samurai was one of the most fun games of the jam, especially the voice acting that made it for me! Multiple samurai attack from multiple directions, trying kill the allies you are defending. The Player creates fireballs with pressure triggers and cast them at the approaching enemies. The feel of creating the fireballs is really amazing, but still at first i tried throwing them instead of shooting. It was really funny watching Julie Heyde try out the game when she had done the voice acting for the game herself.

VR Minigames – by Team Stockholm Daniel Nyberg, Björn Fyrvall, Daniel Kihlgren, Max Nilsson, Jakob Johansson

The Team Stockholm has made four separate little games. Unfortunately I was not able to test out all of the game, so  the guys were so nice and gave us a builds of the games. In the menu you can switch back and forth between the games.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/wyc4tp8yzspwtcj/PodVr_v1_0_Data.zip?oref=e&n=10213565

Pizza Hood –  Putting stuff on your pizza by shooting the topping on them with a bow and arrow is a pretty cool game. The game calls for quick reactions at a high speed.

Follow me – This is a  game you can’t win. Herd runaway sheep back to the fence to save them from wolves. These sheep are just very goofy.

Super Posers – This game is really entertaining to watching, is definitely favors spectators. The “Viver” imitates 16 well known superheroes poses and tries to match their positioning. For me it was definitely the funniest game of Jams.

Pokemon Diorama – The Vive application offers you the opportunity see many fan-favorite pokemon characters in a 3d space.

Don’t drop the torch – by No Shoes No Shirt (Svavar Melberg, Jian Dbeis, Silent Guy, Max Wricht, Lars Bindslev, Remi Stuurwol, Caspar Peterson

In this game you control a character who illuminates the way with a torch in his hand. The figure follows the direction the arms are pointing. Depending on where you are in the room you can move from first or third person perspective.

Space Shoot Stuff VR – by Space Jammers Kristijonas Malisauskas, Johs Duvig, Frederik Petersen lamp

The name sums it well. The game is a beautifully made Space Shooter. The Vive controller is cleverly used to direct the trajectory of the laser shots. The weft direction resulting from the two points, and with trigger pressure can slow the speed. It’s a great game as you can use your entire body to move around as you shoot and dodge around.

VR Connected – by Feels Great by Andreas Schönhaus, Jonas Hansen

VR Connected offers very nice interaction between the real and virtual world. A second player takes the controllers while the “Viver” instructs him verbally based on what he sees in his world. The objective of the game is to have the player with the controller grab multiple balls and move them into corresponding cubes, this will create a portal of light that will in the future enable you to proceed to the next level.

On the Website www.secretgamejam.com we already shouted out during the event. Stay tuned for next Jams.
